I Like Halloween Costumes.

Have you ever had the misfortune of working in a cube all day long? Most of the time, it's not too bad--you can banter with your neighber, get the latest scoop on yada yada's love life, and divulge into other interesting shenanigans. But a lot of the times it's awful. Especially when you have a cubemate(s) that's on the phone ALL DAY.

"When Are We Going to Deploy.....?" is the catchphrase I tend to hear from this neighbor at least 10, maybe 11 times a day if I'm lucky. I'm not sure what he's deploying (I work in a publishing house), but I like to imagine those scenes from old newsreels during the War (World, that is). It makes me think that this guy asking about deploying XX is a cool, flying ace.

What has this to do with Halloween and/or Costumes? Aha, dear reader (because I know only one person has ever read this blog), it has EVERYTHING to do with costumes and Halloween! I want to be a fighter pilot--but not just any flying daughter of a gun, but the cool, the dead, Red Baron. Also, I have a red scarf and Amelia Earhart doesn't wear one. Look out, Snoopy!

I Read Books and Think About Life

"When I was growing up in Hawaii, everyone was a little bit of this and that. I always thought of myself as half-Japanese and it wasn't until I got to the mainland that I realized I am, for all practical purposes, white. My face defines me, in exactly the same way that my mother's Japanese-American face got her turned away from hotels in the south when she was traveling with her Caucasian husband in the 1960s, in exactly the same way every person is defined in the United States. What a shock that was. I still haven't gotten over it." --Rahna Reiko Rizzuto

I just read an excerpt from Rizzuto's Hiroshima in the Morning* (courtesy of Shelf Awareness) and was a leetle (okay, alot) intrigued--both by the story and the author herself. I think the quote above reflects the experiences of a lot of Americans, no? Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior comes to mind, for some reason. Also, does anyone have a copy of the book that I can borrow?

*Note: Yes, my book links are mostly to Amazon pages, for lack of a more cohesive book site. I suppose the publisher Web site would also be a good alternative--or maybe I should support some Indies in the future? I think my idea for an imdb of books isn't a bad idea...

That Reminds Me

Being stuffed reminds me of the game, Chubby Bunny. I used to play it at campfires, church retreats, and an occasional birthday party or two (probably mine).

The basic premise of the game is as follows:

  1. You place 1 jumbo marshmallow in your mouth and keep it there--no chewing! (And no mini marshmallows, either)
  2. Say the phrase, "Chubby Bunny." If everyone in the party can understand you, place another marshmallow in your mouth.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you can no longer say "Chubby Bunny."

And that's basically it! You don't really compete for anything (at least I haven't)--it's more about the experience than the end result. No consequentialism for you!

I Eat Sandwiches.

Today I had the most delish sandwich at Once Upon a Tart. Rumbly tumbly gone. That is all.
